Browns, Leeds A Pint Of Ale Pub Review
Pleasant airy interior but no cask ale and high prices take the shine off Browns.
Browns in Leeds is part of a growing chain of restaurants but this is no typical ‘chain pub’. A cavernous conversion of the old Leeds Permanent Building Society (now part of HBOS), the building is light and airy, full of tall plants lit by beautiful light streaming through the large windows. Although mainly a restaurant, Browns is also a bar, so we recently popped in for a couple of drinks. Our first mistake was to sit in the wrong place - about half of the tables are only licensed for diners rather than drinkers, so we were moved on.
Airy luxury and good service come at a price. Our pint of Erdinger and a small lemonade weighed in at a whopping £4.95. Perhaps we were feeling tight, but that seems a little overpriced to us. There is a good range of continental beers on offer. Old Speckled Hen was on tap, but not a hand-pulled pump, it seemed to be plumbed up to the gas pressure taps so we stayed clear.
Split over a couple of levels and part of Leeds’ Light complex, Browns’ is a good place to pop in for a refreshing beer on a hot summer’s day.
