The Goose at the Bank, Grantham A Pint Of Ale Pub Review
A dull, boring, shabby pub that reminded us all of a Wetherspoons, The Goose at the Bank at least sold decent ale.
It was a cold, foggy Monday night in Grantham when I visited The Goose at the Bank with some work colleagues. The pub used to be a branch of Barclays Bank, so retains its grand façade. You walk under some stone arches to reach the main doors and walk inside.
The pub is a Wetherspoons we believe but can’t find any trace of it on the Wetherspoons website, so we may be mistaken on that point. It certainly has the Wetherspoons feel inside - a large open conversion, a decent selection of ales and a decent price tag to match. We chose a Greene King Fireside; its dark colour and fruity undertones warming us up as we looked out at the cold fog.
The pub is not one of the best we’ve been in. It felt run down and tired. A pool table seems plonked down and the decor is a bit spartan. Our ale was served to us by a bored looking young guy who gave the impression that he’d rather not be working behind a bar in Grantham serving beer to the likes of us.
The ale was good though. It was priced well and the Goose served its purpose as a meeting place before going off for a Christmas meal in one of Grantham’s restaurants.

Update - doing a little more research, it would seem that this is not a Wetherspoons as everyone in our party assumed. It’s a Goose, a chain owned by Mitchells and Butlers who also own All Bar One and several other anodyne pub brands.
