The Audley, Mayfair, London A Pint Of Ale Pub Review

Slow service at a busy lunchtime but well worth the wait! Excellent ale and grand architecture at The Audley.

On our mini-Monopoly pub crawl, we failed to find a pub on Park Lane so walked into Mayfair to find the first pub we came across. The Audley in Mayfair is where we ended up, and a good turn of fate it was too.

Approaching the building, you can really appreciate the pink-tiled grand Victorian exterior. Nestled in amongst the affluent buildings of Mayfair, the building is a feast for the eyes - four or five storeys of grandeur, full of windows and with a turreted corner. Ivy and plants adorn the street level and several tables on the street are positioned in amongst the plants and the boards advertising their real ale choices.

We entered the building just as a busy lunch was under way. The place was full of men in suits sipping their lunchtime pints or tucking in to the food on offer. There were about three young people in black t-shirts behind the bar and one older gentleman in shirt and tie. The three were fussing over a customer’s bill or something and the bar manager was left to serve the pub himself. He was very stressed and we had a long wait on our hands. It took us a patient ten minutes standing for someone to serve us. This darkened Matt’s experience somewhat but I was feeling oddly relaxed. I opted for a half of Young’s Bitter, a really refreshing drink after the stress of not fining a pub on Park Lane. We took our drinks back out into the cold winter air and spent ten minutes admiring the views.

The pub itself is quite large. It has a wonderful traditional interior. A luxurious deep red ceiling holds a beautiful mounted clock above the well-stocked, dark wood bar. There are old framed pictures of people on the walls.

I liked the Audley, Matt wasn’t so sure. The poor service knocked off a mark for Matt, but I think it was just a lunch time complication thing. I really enjoyed taking in the winter air and sipping my half, contemplating how best to get to Regent Street for our next half in a somewhat different atmosphere than that of Mayfair…

The Audley has a Cask Marque plaque.
