The Black Bull, Whitechapel Road, London A Pint Of Ale Pub Review

Basic, down to earth pub on Whitechapel Road, The Black Bull is a Good Beer Guide listed pub well worth a visit.

The Browns on the Monopoly board - the cheap end of town. Whitechapel Road is no Mayfair or Park Lane. Park Lane has its Aston Martin garage and fancy hotels, but Whitechapel Road has the Black Bull. We know where we’d rather be!

Our Mini Monopoly Pub Crawl was drawing to an end and our legs were aching as we dragged ourselves into the Black Bull.

It’s a local pub on a busy street and it sells good beer. It’s an open room and reminds us a lot of the excellent Duck and Drake in Leeds. They are both listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and they are both no-frills boozers which offer excellent ales in a friendly and down to earth manner. The openness, almost sparseness, was a welcome reprieve from the business of the city pubs we’d visited during our adventure.

Service was friendly and we were made to feel welcome. It was quiet when we arrived, just the odd local bloke sitting here and there, some in pairs, huddled over a pint and deep in conversation. A game of dominoes was in progress at the bar.

As Matt and I sipped our pints of Nethergate, we looked around at the framed paintings of the area in years gone by on the walls. There was the odd poster from years ago. A couple that caught our eyes were about the hanging of Dick Turpin in York and the victory of Nelson at Trafalgar. (Probably not original, but atmospheric all the same). There was a large black bull in a Santa hat looking down on us as we chatted and looked forward to the train ride back to Leeds.

Although the area is not as affluent as others that we visited on our Monopoly crawl, The Black Bull was a refreshing, down to earth boozer on an unusual trip.
