The Sherlock Holmes, Northumberland Avenue, London A Pint Of Ale Pub Review
A wonderful looking pub, The Sherlock Holmes is full of nicknacks that pay homage to the famous detective.
We really enjoyed our walk from The Marquess of Anglesey to The Sherlock Holmes on Northumerland Avenue. We were starting to feel a little merry and the air down by the Thames, if not fresh, was cool and refreshing. It was a wonderful thing, being greeted by the beautiful, welcoming exterior of the well-lit, cosy-looking Sherlock Holmes pub.
I think we may have made a little mistake with the location. The pub is set back from Northumberland Avenue a little bit and it’s actually on Northumberland Street but we’re not going to get too upset about that. It’s an anonymous kind of street, down by the Thames, but the pub looks far from anonymous - we stepped through the doors into a really busy little pub…
There is definitely a Sherlock Holmes theme in this pub! He appears everywhere from the frosted glass windows to the looping TV episodes played on a TV in the top corder of the room. There was more Holmes memorabilia than we could record. Morland even brew a special ale for this establishment - The Sherlock Holmes Ale.
This is a Greene King pub and has a traditional, Victorian feel to it and I really liked the place. Matt however was a little disappointed in it; he’s always loved Holmes and was looking forward to coming here. I think he felt a bit let down. There is a U-shaped counter that dominates the room. The tables, chairs and stools are in the area around the bar. Framed theatre posters of Sherlock Holmes productions adorn the walls.
The pub was packed! There was a wide mix of clientèle and the pub was loud with chatter. The staff behind the bar, although busy, were friendly and knowledgeable of the beers they were selling.

Did you head upstairs to the re-creation of the sitting room at 221B? That’s really the highlight of the place.

Scott, thanks for your comment. No! We did not go upstairs. Unfortunately, we did not do our preparatory homework well enough. The pub was really busy and we only had 20 minutes or so there, so we didn’t realise there was an interesting upstairs. Ah well, next time…
