The Sun Inn, Alnmouth A Pint Of Ale Pub Review
A fantastic pub in a fantastic village, The Sun is one of Alnmouth’s finest. Small, cosy, dog-friendly local pub, ideal for a pint after a walk along the beach!
The Sun is a white, low building sitting at the top of the main street of the beautiful Northumberland village of Alnmouth. It’s a simple affair inside. There is one main area that contains the counter. It’s a dark space with dark carpets and a dark beamed ceiling. Comfortable chairs and benches make up the seating arrangements. There is a second, smaller room by the toilets that contains a pool table and nearly always someone playing on it. A note if you’re a slightly tipsy visitor new to the pub - there’s a small step down into the toilets!
The ale was Black Sheep and it was very drinkable. We visited on new year’s eve and were here to see in 2007 with an ale in hand. It was very busy but very jovial. We weren’t made to feel like outsiders which can sometimes happen in small villages when out-of-towners decide to descend on the village. Everyone, customers and staff, was friendly and my friend Simon who has a flat in the village noted that this is perhaps the friendliest pub in Alnmouth.
The pub being so busy and the ale being so good meant that it ran out shortly before midnight which was a real shame. The best part of the night for me was when at about five minutes to midnight everyone left the pub! We followed them all, proving that we weren’t taking drinks outside by an ever watchful member of staff on the door, to the church clock. People from the other pubs in Alnmouth had also come out and we saw in 2007 by the chimes of the clock. It was a very friendly and unique few minutes, after which we all turned round and returned to our drinks in The Sun.
It is also worth noting that The Sun is a dog friendly establishment. At one point, Simon brought in Buster to see the hustle and bustle of the new year, but it was a bit too busy for him to take up residence under one of the tables.
