De Pieper, Amsterdam A Pint Of Ale Pub Review
A wonderful example of a traditional Amsterdam brown bar, De Pieper oozes atmosphere and is an excellent place for a drink.
It was a cold rainy night when we were wandering the streets of Amsterdam looking for a drink. The lights of De Pieper looked warm and inviting, so we went in. We were greeted with an excellent atmosphere, a small, warm, buzzing place that immediately made us feel welcome. We ordered our drinks and sat down in a small corner.
There are a few wooden tables squeezed into the small, roughly L-shaped room. The ceilings are low and hung with a net of fairy lights. A pile of magazines allows you to pass the time reading (in Dutch) if that’s your wont. Of course there is fresh sand on the floor to soak up any spillages. We retrospectively found out that the Lonely Planet guide calls De Pieper the “king of brown bars” and we can see why - it’s an excellent little place that combines the best of all the other bars in Amsterdam that we chose to visit. (Apart from the beer - still not much choice.)
There’s not a whole lot more to say about De Pieper apart from that it has a resident cat. It sat on the heater top during our visit, simply keeping a watchful eye on the coming and going in its bar.
Oh, and be wary of the route to the toilets. The loos are downstairs. The stairs are the steepest, most rickety contraptions we’ve seen. The trip down there was fraught with excitement, I really recommend it!
